LiUNA Local 506 24th Annual Nick Barbieri Bocce Tournament Raises $100,000

TORONTO, Sept. 4, 2015 /CNW/ - For nearly a quarter century, LiUNA (Labourers International Union of North America) Local 506 together with the Toronto Construction Association, hosts its Annual Bocce Tournament in memory of beloved member Nick Barbieri.

Today, this annual tournament is not only a celebration of Nick's life, but also a successful fundraiser for various charitable institutions. Each year the Committee selects a charity that has at one point affected LiUNA Members and their families. Charities such as Lupus Ontario; Thalassemia Foundation; Huntington Society; Starlight Starbright Children's Foundation; Palliative Care Unit of the Hospital for Sick Children in Memory of Joshua Drake; Second Harvest; Sunnybrook Hospital Burn Unit; Camp Oochigeas; Big Brothers Big Sisters; Shining Through Centre, Bladder Cancer Canada; Toronto Azzuri Club and many more.

LiUNA International Vice President and Regional Manager for Central and Eastern Canada, Joseph Mancinelli, acknowledged the commitment of local 506 by saying, "through the foresight that Carmen Principato and his executive board had, it was a great idea to create an event that brings people together in a social atmosphere. It is an event that not only brings people in the industry together, but also raises money for charity. The 2015 Bocce Tournament proudly raised $100,000 with a portion of the funds contributed to the William Osler Foundation and to Spinal Cord Injury Ontario. Since its inception, the Nick Barbieri Bocce Tournament has raised well over two million dollars to help improve the lives of Canadians in the Greater Toronto Area.
