Press Briefing Wednesday 10:00 a.m. About $16 Billion Damages Claim against Chevron Over Amazon Environmental Disaster

WASHINGTON, Apr. 15 /PRNewswire/ --

WASHINGTON, April 15 /PRNewswire/ --

What: According to an independent court-appointed expert, Chevron is facing the largest environmental damages claim in history -- up to $16 billion for dumping 18 billion gallons of toxic wastewater into an inhabited area of the Amazon rainforest in Ecuador. Representatives of affected communities and indigenous groups, in Washington to receive prestigious environmental honor the Goldman Prize at the National Geographic Institute, will hold a press briefing at the National Press Club to respond to misleading claims by Chevron about the landmark environmental lawsuit and the company's record-breaking liability. Visually compelling B-roll and photos of the toxic contamination are available upon request.

Where: The Murrow Room, National Press Club, 529 14th Street NW, Washington, D.C. When: 10:00 a.m. EDT Wednesday, April 16.

QUOTE: Atossa Soltani, Amazon Watch Executive Director, said: "Chevron has launched a malicious campaign to defame the Ecuadorian winners of the Goldman Awards because it faces a $16 billion damages bill in a court of law. This Goldman Prize, for shining the spotlight on the environmental catastrophe Chevron caused in Ecuador, is now itself the target of Chevron's public relations machine. Chevron's motivation in attacking the Goldman award recipients is to cover up the truth of this enormous liability from shareholders."
