Fiorina: "A year ago, John McCain starting calling for a substantial reform of unemployment insurance. And in addition to paying people while they are unemployed, he said we need to train people so that they compete, can compete in the 21st century for 21st century jobs. Had we done that a year ago, we would be in much better shape. Of course we need to help unemployed workers get back in the game. And we help them get back in the game by giving them the skills they need to compete for 21st century jobs. That's why innovation is so important because it's only innovation that brings new jobs back into an economy. So what I believe in 2004 and what John McCain and I believe today is, we have to focus on job creation and worker retraining so that our workers can continue to be the most productive. We can't simply leave them behind." (MSNBC's "Morning Joe," 4/7/08)
Fiorina: "[H]e also has made some very specific suggestions around the need to restructure debt and he'll have more to say about that this week and the following week. But we know that what has to happen here fundamentally is that both consumer debt has to be restructured as well as banks' debt has to be restructured. He does believe there is a role for government to help the truly needy, to make sure that we mitigate systemic economic risk, which is why he supported the actions that were taken in support of Bear Stearns but he does not believe the role of government is to help out irresponsible speculators or frankly, irresponsible investors." (CNBC's "Squawk Box," 4/7/08)
