Use of Steroids and Performance Enhancers

Anabolic steroids are used to increase the testosterone production in the body, which in turn stimulates muscle growth and development. This effect is also sought through the use of over the counter substances such as creatine, androstenedione, and erythropoietin. All of these drugs have serious side effects related to the increased level of testosterone. Risks run from physiological differences, such as facial hair in women or gynecomastia (breast growth) in men, to serious health risks such as heart failure. These drugs do have some medical uses but are carefully controlled and are illegal unless used in accordance with a prescription.
