History and General Information About Drug Use in Sports

The primary reason athletes use drugs is to gain an edge over their competitors. Not surprisingly, therefore, steroids and other performance-enhancing agents are the most widely used drugs among athletes. Nevertheless, athletes also routinely make headlines for abusing alcohol, marijuana, cocaine and various narcotics -- drugs that do anything but enhance an athlete¹s performance.
