Reviewed by Joel Zand May 16, 2001 Vega$ At Stuckeyville This episode we see Phil trying to play the part of a Las Vegas showman, pumping oxygen into Stuckeybowl to keep patrons happy while they spend their time and money at the alley. It's Vega$ Night at the alley, where a good time is had by all. People play pretend slot machines, pass by a Leon Spinks look-a-like, and ask Stuckeybowl employees to "hit me" with another card playing twenty-one. Ed has such a good time that Carol is ready to abandon company until he takes her for a stroll to the historic spot where the two first kissed nearly a year ago, causing Ed to make his fateful decision to buy the town's bowling alley. Stuckeyvillians can get very nostalgic. Frivolous Litigation Ed's client-o'-the-week is a local golfer who is teed off at losing $10,000 in prize money when the golfer's former caddy let out a shout during a potentially prize-winning putt. It appears that Ed's client had a history of treating the defendant badly. Years earlier Ed's client didn't even think of tipping the guy a penny after a hot day on the tournament green. Beyond attempting to negotiate the suit, this case had little chance of succeeding, and it was a foolish decision for the bowling alley lawyer or any other practitioner to even consider taking the case. The judge renders the right verdict when he tosses the suit. Chalk this week's verdict up to a combination of sweet justice and bad sportsmanship. Honoring The Real Dr. Jerome Dr. Mike Burton is part of a scheme to honor the mean-spirited Dr. Jerome. The Tri-State Physicians' Association has named him the physician of the year, and Mike is responsible for the festivities. It comes as no surprise that Dr. Jerome is furious over the honor and his being placed in the spotlight. He demands that it be a low-key event with no theatrics. Dr. Burton gets his just desserts at a celebratory dinner when the caterer exercises his artistic license at the affair with a wild Broadway song and dance routine that follows the boring food that the good doctor demanded be on everyone's plate. Prom Punch Stuckeyville's most newsworthy teen, Warren Cheswick faces another crisis when it comes to asking a date to the prom. Will it be Donna Tozzi of Mt. Precipice and movie-date fame, or Jessica Martell, who is dumped by Stuckeyville High's BMOC. Warren overhears Jessica's boyfriend in the school cafeteria giving Jessica the "it's not you, it's me" routine. Oh no! This presents Warren a dilemma of epic proportions: should he ask Donna or Jessica to the prom? Of course, there is nobody better to turn to for advice than Ed, Warren's big-brother in all affairs of the heart. Ed and Warren's friends urge the love-troubled teen to ask Jessica out, rather than the Donna. Using a twenty-first century way of his confronting his inner fears, Warren compiles a video documentary to chronicle his dilemma. Is he guided by his heart, or by bad advice? You don't have to be a rocket scientist to realize that when Warren asks Jessica to the prom, and then asks Donna only after his first choice turns him down, he is left standing alone. Perhaps his heart will find comfort in next episode's season finale.
Long-Term Prospects Carol and Ed are still dancing around their romance that was put on hold earlier this year. When Carol asks him on the roof of Stuckeybowl (viewers know this is a common destination for serious reflection) where they will be decades from now, you just know that the two have some unresolved relationship issues. Will we know where they are going before the season is over? |

In a curious role reversal with the show's protagonist, Joel Zand is a New York solo practitioner who left his Midwestern roots behind to work with Findlaw. He has represented New York City landlords, tenants, and folks with pets in pit-bullesque litigation (always representing the underdog, of course). Zand received his J.D. from the Benjamin N. Cardozo School of Law, and his B.A. from the University of Chicago. |
