  • An Illinois man is charged with plotting to stage a terrorist attack in a suburban shopping mall on the Friday before Christmas. The suspect told a confidential informant that he was looking forward to placing grenades in garbage cans inside the mall, explaining “[t]hat’s pandemonium. The garbage [sic]going to be shrapnel.” The suspect also admitted he thought of attacking Jews at a local synagogue:

I probably would have eventually ended up just stabbing the **it outta some Jews or something. Just stabbing them [derogatory slur] with a steak knife…I had already started to look at synagogues on Mapquest…One of them was down the block from the masjid [mosque]…I know that they do their [worship] thing on Saturdays…as soon as I see them fools going in the building, I had planned on trying to grab one, depending on how it was, [derogatory slur] trying to run in the building all at once and open up shop, I was just going to go over there and shank one or two of them.”
The suspect also made a videotape in preparation for the attack, saying that he wanted “to let the enemies of Islam know, and to let the Muslims alike know that the time for jihad is now.”
