Man gets 45-day jail sentence in hit and run

By Matthew Gilbert, Court TV

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (Court TV) — A man convicted of killing a state trooper during a January 2001 hit and run accident was sentenced Tuesday to 45 days in jail and 18 months probation.

A couple hours after the accident, James Sheppard, 35, reportedly told police that he thought he struck an object on the snow-covered road, not Trooper John Mann. Sheppard said he realized he actually hit the trooper after hearing news reports about the accident.

In February 2002, Sheppard was found guilty of leaving the scene of a fatal accident involving death and injury, but was acquitted of reckless vehicular homicide. He faced up to two years in prison.
