Piracy, Hijacking and Kidnapping Charges Against Accused Somali Teen Pirate
U.S. v. Abduwali Abdukhadir Muse
April 21, 2009
Federal hijacking and kidnapping charges were filed against a teenager from Somalia accused in a piracy incident involving the Maersk Alabama container ship.
According to the criminal charges, Abduwali Abdukhadir Muse "was the first pirate to board the Maersk Alabama," and he fired his gun from the deck at Captain Richard Phillips, who was on the bridge.
Muse allegedly "told the Captain to stop the ship…[and] conducted himself as the leader of the pirates," and demanded money from Captain Phillips. The Captain reportedly gave Muse approximately $30,000 in cash from the ship's safe, and the defendant is accused of distributing that money to other pirates.
