College Football Today

(AP) - - Houston's Case Keenum threw for a career-high 559 yards and had five touchdowns, the last a 46-yarder to Patrick Edwards with 21 seconds remaining, and the No. 15 Cougars beat Southern Mississippi 50-43.

GREAT ESCAPE

Undefeated No. 7 Iowa put itself in a bind again, falling behind Indiana 24-14 heading into the fourth quarter. Hawkeyes quarterback Ricky Stanzi threw five interceptions to help put Iowa in a hole. Then Stanzi started taking advantage of the Hooisers' porous pass defense, connecting on two long touchdown passes and sparking yet another Iowa comeback. The Hawkeyes went on to win 42-24.

PADDING THE COFFERS

New Mexico State received $850,000 to fill an open date for Ohio State. What did the Buckeyes get? A 45-0 victory that could barely qualify as a tuneup for a tough November stretch of games. Ohio State finishes its season against Penn State, Iowa and Michigan.

BIG-TIME BACKUP

Cincinnati second-stringer Zach Collaros improved to 2-0 as a starter, filling in for the injured Tony Pike and leading the unbeaten Bearcats to a 28-7 victory against Syracuse. Collaros is 47 of 63 (75 percent) for 749 yards, nine touchdowns and one interception this season and has rushed for 213 yards and two more scores.

BETTER THINGS TO DO?

Florida State's 45-42 victory against North Carolina State, drew only 67,712 fans to Doak Campbell Stadium in Tallahassee, the smallest crowd for a Seminoles' home game since 1993. Fans who blew off the game missed a thriller and Bobby Bowden's second straight victory after losing three straight.

HONORING JAZZ

In its first home game since Jasper Howard was killed, the Connecticut Huskies and their fans honored the UConn cornerback before and during the game against Rutgers. All the players and many fans wore Howard's jersey number, 6, on T-shirts to honor the cornerback who was stabbed to death Oct. 18 outside a campus dance. Every fan entering the stadium for the game against Rutgers received a card with Howard's number on it, and the first 15,000 received wristbands honoring Howard. UConn players wore a helmet sticker with Howard's initials on it, while Rutgers players wore a "6" on their helmets. The marching band came onto the field wearing No. 6 jerseys and changed the "O" in the word UConn into a "6" during its pregame program.

RECORD-BREAKER

Terrell Hudgins of Elon set an FCS (formerly I-AA) record with his 24th 100 yard receiving game, surpassing NFL Hall of Famer Jerry Rice, who set the previous mark from 1981-84 at Mississippi Valley State. Hudgins had 11 catches for 153 yards and three touchdowns as Elon beat Wofford 34-6.

QUOTE, UNQUOTE

"Our guys don't buckle. If they were ever going to buckle, I think today would have been the day." - Iowa coach Kirk Ferentz, whose team rallied from a 14-point deficit and overcame six turnovers in a 42-24 victory over Indiana.

"As the game went on, we were just trying to get out of here healthy." - New Mexico State coach DeWayne Walker said after the Aggies lost 45-0 to Ohio State.

FOURTH AND INCHES

Nebraska snapped a two-game losing streak with a 20-10 victory at Baylor, but the Huskers' offense is still sputtering. Nebraska has scored 37 points in its last three games. ... Wisconsin's 37-0 victory against Purdue was its first shutout against a Big Ten opponent since 1999. ... Missouri sacked Colorado quarterbacks eight times and forced four turnovers while opening a 33-point lead in a 36-17 win. ... Penn became the first program to play 1,300 games.
