Future of GOP and moderates in party uncertain

By VALERIE BAUMAN Associated Press Writer

(AP) - ALBANY, N.Y. - If moderate Republicans had any fears about their future within a party riven by factional infighting, the surprise exit of the Republican in the race for a rock-solid Republican congressional seat has to leave them wondering if they're welcome at all in today's GOP.

The day after Republican state Assemblywoman Dierdre Scozzafava suspended her campaign for the 23rd Congressional District seat, party leadership took to the airways to insist the party is strong and inclusive. Democrats are describing a Republican party out of touch with the people.

Scozzafava failed to connect with voters, party officials or, perhaps most important, campaign donors, largely because of her support for abortion rights, same-sex marriage and union rights. That opened the door to Conservative Party candidate Doug Hoffman and Democrat Bill Owens.
