Philly transit talks on hold as Series approaches

By MARYCLAIRE DALE Associated Press Writer

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Talks aimed at avoiding a Philadelphia transit strike are to resume just hours before threatened strike could disrupt bus and subway services during the World Series.

A spokesman for the Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority, Richard Maloney, says the two sides discussed wages, pensions and health care until 11 p.m. Thursday.

Talks are on hold until 5 p.m. Friday. Union members have threatened to walk out if a new contract is not reached as early as 12:01 a.m. Saturday.

A union spokeswoman did not immediately return calls seeking comment.

The Phillies and New York Yankees are scheduled to play the third and fourth games of the World Series on Saturday and Sunday in Philadelphia. A fifth game would also be held there Monday if necessary.
