Civil rights group to elect new president

ATLANTA (AP) - The Rev. Bernice King is among two candidates being considered to head the civil rights organization co-founded by her father, the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr.

The Southern Christian Leadership Conference will choose a new president Thursday in Atlanta. If elected, Bernice King would be the first woman to head the group in its 52-year history.

King, 46, is the youngest daughter of the civil rights icon and Coretta Scott King and is also a motivational speaker and author.

Judge Wendell Griffen of Pine Bluff, Ark., is also being considered for the position. He was the first black attorney to work for a major Arkansas law firm and is an ordained minister and pastor of New Millennium Church in Little Rock, Ark.
