ICC prosecutor wants to investigate Kenya violence

NAIROBI, Kenya (AP) - The prosecutor for the International Criminal Court says he is certain crimes against humanity were committed in Kenya's 2007 postelection violence.

Luis Moreno Ocampo says he will ask a pre-trial chamber in December to allow him to formally open an investigation into violence from December 2007 to February 2008 after the contentious presidential election. That violence claimed more than 1,000 lives.

The ICC prosecutor spoke to journalists Thursday after meeting with President Mwai Kibaki and Prime Minister Raila Odinga.

Kibaki and Odinga say Kenya will work with the ICC to make sure justice is done.

The two leaders signed a power-sharing deal last year that details wide-ranging reforms seen as essential to avoid future violence.
