Karzai opponent: Govt cannot fight `corruption'

KABUL (AP) - Afghan President Hamid Karzai's challenger in the recent presidential election says the current government cannot bring legitimacy to the troubled nation and will not be able to rein in corruption.

Former foreign minister Abdullah Abdullah reiterated his complaints Wednesday to reporters about the Afghan Independent Election Commission. But asked if he was personally challenging the declaration of Karzai as president, Abdullah said: "I leave it to the people of Afghanistan to judge."

The election commission proclaimed Karzai the victor of the country's tumultuous ballot Monday, canceling a planned runoff and ending a political crisis two and a half months after a fraud-marred first round.
