5 British soldiers killed in south Afghanistan

KABUL (AP) - Britain's defense ministry says five British soldiers have been killed in a gunfire attack in the southern Afghan province of Helmand. Afghan authorities say the attacker was a policeman.

The ministry said Wednesday that the attack occurred on Tuesday afternoon.

NATO said the troops had been at an Afghan police checkpoint when the attack occurred. The incident is being investigated by Afghan authorities and Britain's Royal Military Police.
