EPA settles with Detroit co. over hazardous waste

DETROIT (AP) - Federal officials have reached an agreement with a Detroit company over alleged violations of hazardous waste regulations at two oil recycling operations.

The Environmental Protection Agency said Friday it has ordered Usher Enterprises Inc. to spend $700,000 improving two facilities.

The company will install new tanks, upgrade secondary containment and test other tanks. It also will pay a $19,700 penalty.

Usher Enterprises is a processor that stored nearly 1 million gallons of used oil at one location and had more than 50 tanks at the other.

EPA inspected the facilities because of their potential effect on the Detroit River, an important nesting and feeding area for migratory birds.
